Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)

The MSLT is a test to objectively measure your level of daytime sleepiness during the daytime. It consists of 5 naps that are spaced throughout the day. Each nap is 20-45 minutes in length and occurs approximately 2 hours apart. The first nap will begin between 7:00am and 8:00am and the last nap will start between 2:00pm and 4:00pm.

Breakfast and lunch will be served during your visit. Breakfast usually arrives between 8:00am and 9:00am. Lunch is usually served between 12noon and 1:00pm. If you have dietary restrictions or have food allergies, please notify the Sleep Technician running your study so that proper arrangements can be made.

During the day you will continue to be hooked up to electrodes, but you will have complete mobility to walk around. In order for the test to be valid you must remain awake during the period between naps. Do not stay in bed once the naps are over! Beverages containing caffeine (coffee, teas, & colas) or chocolate may also invalidate the test. We ask that you refrain from these items. If you smoke, please refrain from smoking an hour prior to each nap. If you use CPAP/BiPAP at home then you will be expected to wear it during the naps. If you need to bring your pager or cellular phone, it must be turned off during each nap.

After the MSLT is completed, the Sleep Technician will disconnect the wires (this takes less than 15 minutes). You will be given the opportunity to take a shower and get cleaned up if you wish. There is no need to “check out.” The Technologist will be able to give you an approximate time as to when the test will be completed the day of the study. If you have further questions or concerns, please call the facility where your sleep study will be performed. We look forward to your visit.
