WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common condition associated with blockage of the upper airway during sleep. Sleep apnea causes hypertension, heart failure, leg edema, stroke, coronary stent failure, impotence and adverse postoperative events. Unfortunately, about 80% of patients with sleep apnea are undiagnosed. Like diabetes, sleep apnea is often clinically silent. Even an expert history and physical exam is only about 60% sensitive for sleep apnea. This is the reason that sleep apnea screening is very important.
